Facility
The Kirkwood Kids facility provides a wonderful setting for learning and fun! It offers the following features:
- Classrooms that are bright, clean and colorful.
- Separate fenced-in outdoor areas for our infant/young toddlers and our toddlers/preschoolers providing our children with the age appropriate equipment and necessary boundaries to expand their mind, and allow them the freedom to explore.
- Indoor active play area providing protection from rain, snow, and heat.
- Gross motor play is recommended at a minimum of one hour per day and our teachers have ample space between their classrooms, outdoor area, and indoor area to allow for this developmentally appropriate expression of fun!
History
Kirkwood Community College opened its first child care program in 1976 as part of the Community Education Division at Kirkwood's Lincoln Center. The center served children from three to five years of age. The following year, the center received a grant to fund a program for infants and toddlers from six weeks through two years of age. The center was at the Lincoln Center site for 15 years.
In 1988, a steering committee was set up to plan the building of a new on-campus child care center. A goal of the college was to implement an Early Childhood Education associates degree program that would be housed at the child care center.
The center was built on its current site, named Kirkwood Kids, and opened August 26, 1991, with the capacity to serve 111 children. The Center serves children of Kirkwood students and staff as well as community families. In addition to the Early Childhood program, the center provides learning opportunities for Kirkwood students in several other college programs.
In 2010, Kirkwood Community College entered into a partnership with Waypoint to become the management company for Kirkwood Kids Child Development Center.
Sample Day
Sample Infant Schedule:
Infants have their own individual patterns for feeding, playtime, and sleeping. Therefore a typical schedule for infants includes flexibility to meet each child’s individual needs throughout their day. Along with feeding, sleeping and diapering, our highly trained teachers offer a nurturing environment with lots of personal attention and interaction such as singing, reading, and talking to develop their bodies and minds.
