Preschool Program and CurriculumThe three-hour preschool day is funded through the Department of Education and the Cedar Rapids School District and the College Community School District. This funding is used to maintain quality teachers in the classroom, provide more training opportunities to the staff, and increase the amount of resources and materials in the room for each child.
Waypoint classrooms utilize the Creative Curriculum for Preschoolers®, an approved curriculum by the Districts. The main ideal set forth by this curriculum is that children learn best through a combination of directed and self-initiated play and exploration. Weekly themes are used to expand the children’s learning on a variety of topics. These themes are incorporated into the classroom’s learning centers and focuses on the core concepts of literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and technology.
The preschool program will provide child assessments in the areas of cognitive, physical, language, and social/emotional development each fall and spring. The assessments will be shared with parents during home visits, a requirement of the school district’s preschool program. The purpose of the home visit is to get a better idea of each child's environment, acknowledge the parent as the child's first teacher, and evaluate goals and milestones for children for the school year.
