Waypoint Hosts Donor Open House
|
An Open House was held for current and new donors at
Waypoint on Friday, February 13, 2004 at 5:30 p.m.
Guests enjoyed beverages and appetizers, a tour of
Waypoint and the Madge Phillips Center for homeless
and heard testimonials from two Waypoint clients.
Steve and Suzanne Caves were the Honorary Tour
Guides. Beverages were provided by David Zylstra and
Tiffany Earl, and Cedar Brewing Company. A floral
centerpiece was provided by The Flower Shop at Cedar
Memorial Park. The food was provided by Winifred’s
Catering.
Thanks to all who attended!

United Way Launches 211 Assistance Number
|
On February 11, 2004, United Way of East Central Iowa
brought a 24-hour, nationwide help-line number, 2-1-1
to 24 eastern and southeastern Iowa Counties to offer
essential services such as locating affordable child
care, seeking a treatmenet program, or finding safe
housing.

One in Eight: Report on Rape in Iowa
|
One in eight Iowa women has been the victim of
forcible rape in her lifetime. At a press conference
on Tuesday, February 3 at 9:30 a.m. at Waypoint, the
Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault released a
report demonstrating that Iowa has a substantial rape
problem.

Mary Meissner Testimonial: Domestic Violence Survivor Gives Back
|
Mary Meissner describes herself as “one of the
fortunate ones.” After years of being abused as a
child and in her marriage, she found her way out.
Today, as she continues to build a healthy future for
herself, she is trying to help other abused women
discover a better life through her volunteer work at
Waypoint.

US Bank to Offer Financial Classes for Waypoint Clients
|
US Bank has proposed a series of financial education
seminars for women, children and families associated
with Waypoint to help them achieve and maintain
financial independence. Potential topics could be
checking and savings, mortgages, investing, wills and
living wills, budgeting, credit, and loans and leases.

Students at Madison Elementary Deliver Food to Shelters at Waypoint
|
On March 12, 2004, students from Madison Elementary
delivered food items to the homeless women and
children at the Madge Phillips Center. The students
held a fundraiser selling "Valograms" -- Valentine
treats, in which they raised $200. The students went
shopping for the food items and personally delivered
them to the shelter.

Mayor Pate Reads Story to Children at Waypoint
|
In an effort to promote awareness of homelessness, on
Tuesday, February 17, 2004, Cedar Rapids Mayor Paul
Pate visited and read a book to the children at
Waypoint.

Waypoint Participates in Downtown Holiday Parade
|
Waypoint staff and volunteers participated in the
Holiday Parade, held throughout downtown Cedar Rapids
on Thursday evening, December 11th. The theme of the
Waypoint float was "Waypoint Shines for the
Holidays." Staff members walked along the float with
star costumes and handed out candy and information on
how to donate holiday gifts to the children living in
Waypoint shelters.

US Bank to Offer Loan Discount With Supply Donation to Waypoint
|
USBank will be having a 24 hour loan sale from 6am
December 11 to 6 am December 12 at our location at
5321 Council St. NE in Cedar Rapids. You can meet in
person with bankers on your schedule to discuss new
loan needs or possibilities of refinancing. If you
bring a holiday gift or basic need item for Waypoint
you will receive a discount on you loan rate. There
will be drawings every four hours for gift
certificates and electronic items. Also, z102.9 will
be broadcasting live from 4pm to 7 pm on December 11.
From now till December 13 USbank has collection boxes
available for customers and employees to make
donations to Waypoint. Everyone is a winner with
USBank’s 24 hour loan sale.

Preferred Chiropractic Sponsors Hat & Mitten Drive for Waypoint
|
Preferred Chiropractic sponsored a hat and mitten
drive during their Patient Appreciation Day on
November 1st from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The donations were
distributed to homeless children at Waypoint’s Madge
Phillips Center. Patients received a free adjustment,
exam and posture analysis.

Mayor Pate Presents City Proclamation Against Domestic Violence
|
Waypoint displayed artwork designed by domestic
violence victims and handed out information about
domestic violence in Greene Sqare Park on Friday,
October 17 over the noon hour. Mayor Paul Pate came
and presented a proclamation from the city. This
event was one of several events during October to help
create awareness about domestic abuse in our community
for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Over 10,000 Items Donated by Toyota Financial Services Employees
|
Waypoint was the recipient of over 10,000 food,
cleaning and supply items from a drive coordinated by
Toyota Financial Services’ employees. Over 5 van-
loads of supplies were delivered the Waypoint’s two
shelters to re-stock the shelves.

Candlelight Vigil Held at Waypoint for Victims of Violence

Waypoint clients, staff, and community members
gathered at Waypoint on Tuesday, October 21st for a
Candlelight Vig gil to remember and reflect on those
lives that have been affected by domestic violence.
Over 50 people attended.

Pillar of the Community award at Waypoint’s annual
Tribute to Women of Achievement event held at the

Waypoint Night at the Ballpark Raises Awareness
|
It was "Waypoint Night at the Ballpark" at New
Veteran’s Memorial Stadium on Friday, August 1st. As
the Kernels battled Wisconsin, Waypoint staff and
supporters cheered them on! Over $800 was raised for
Waypoint through ticket sales for a pre-game autograph
session and an autographed jersey raffle. Food and
supplies were also collected for Waypoint Shelters.

Over 100 Professsionals Gather for Domestic Violence Training
|
Over 100 community professionals gathered at First
Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 27, 2003, from
8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for "Working with Victims of
Domestic Violence" training. The event was co-
sponsored by Waypoint and the Partnership for Safe
Families.

Calvary Baptist Church Volunteers Paint Bedrooms at DV Shelter
|
Several volunteers from Calvary Baptist Church shared
their talents by painting and decorating all the
bedrooms at the Waypoint Domestic Violence
Shelter...offering a more inviting atmosphere for the
women and children who stay there. Each room has a
different theme with inspirational quotes incorporated
into the creative design and murals.

In April, HyVee representative, Elizabeth Metz,
presented a check to Waypoint Executive Director, Liz
Hoskins, for proceeds from its employee fund drive.

Curves for Women Hosts Supply Drive for Shelters
|
Lauri Shemwell, owner of Curves for Women at 3541 1st
Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, coordinated a supply drive among
its membership during February and March. New members
received a discount on their membership fee when they
brought in a food or supply item for Waypoint shelters.

Valentine Party Hosted by Grace Bible Fellowship Church
|
Women and children served at Waypoint’s Madge Phillips
Center and the Domestic Violence Shelter enjoyed a
Valentine’s Day Party in the lower level of the Madge
Phillips Center. The party was hosted by volunteers
from Grace Bible Fellowship Church of Lisbon, Iowa.

Alliant Energy Employees at Waypoint for United Way Day of Caring
|
On Wednesday, August 28, 2002, United Way kicked off
this year’s campaign with a "Day of Caring" for area
businesses and community members to participate in
community service. Approximately 30 employees from
Alliant Energy spent thier "Day of Caring" at
Waypoint. Workers painted the entire main level of
Waypoint’s Madge Phillips Center for homeless, built
additional shelving for food and supplies and painted
several rooms on the second floor of Waypoint.

Waypoint Makes History with Initiation of Men to Governance
|
For the first time in the 107-year history of Waypoint
Services for Women, Children and Families (formerly
the YWCA), two men will take governing positions on
its Board of Directors. This move is a result of new
by-laws implemented since the organization
disaffiliated from the national YWCA last fall. Both
men and women may now participate on the board of the
organization.

Tribute to Women Nominee and Mercy Match Deadline Approaching
|
Waypoint is seeking nominees and support for The Mercy
Match for its annual Tribute to Women of Achievement
event on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at the Collins
Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, Cedar Rapids.
Deadline for nominations and sponsors is Wednesday,
July 24, 2002. Community members may submit
nominations online by clicking on the "Events" tab and
selecting "Tribute to Women."

p.m. for area congressional, legislative and county
candidates so they can respond to issues that effect
women and children in our community. The event is co-

Catherine McAuley Center for Women, Girl Scouts,

Festival of Races Results Are In

Nearly 1,000 adults and children gathered in downtown
Cedar Rapids on Saturday morning, May 4th for
Waypoint’s Festival of Races, Race for the Homeless.
The Festival of Races is the main fundraising event
for Waypoint programs including 8K and 5K Runs, 5K
Health Walk, Corporate Relay, Kids Klassic, Bunny Hop
and Costume Character Race.

Waypoint Services for Women, Children and Families at
its annual Tribute to Women of Achievement event. The
word Waypoint, defined as “a point along a journey,”
provides valid analogies for the services the
organization provides.

YWCA of Cedar Rapids and Linn County to Disaffiliate
|
The Board of Directors of the YWCA of Cedar Rapids and
Linn County announces its intent to disaffiliate from
the YWCA of the USA. While the organization will have
a new name, the services will remain the same.
