My name is Alexa Ganzeveld, and this summer I was the Resource Development & Marketing (RDM) intern at Waypoint. I will be starting my second year at Wartburg College this fall, and I was looking for an internship opportunity that would give me hands-on experience to go along with my major. I am studying journalism, communication, and public relations, which made the Resource Development & Marketing internship a perfect fit for me. The position gave me a variety of tasks and projects to work on that supported Waypoint’s marketing efforts, such as event planning and creating social media content.
Since I grew up in Cedar Rapids, I had always heard about all the amazing things Waypoint does for the community. I first got involved with Waypoint when I supported fundraisers my high school was hosting for the organization. Through the RDM internship this summer, I was able to support Waypoint in many other ways.
When I first got to Waypoint in May, I was able to meet with staff from each of Waypoint’s programs: Domestic Violence Victim Services, Housing & Homeless Services, and Child Care. This helped me get a better idea of all the things that happen at Waypoint. After I had a better understanding of all the ways Waypoint supports the community, I was then able to start creating social media content that was tailored to each of the services or events.
In the RDM department, every day was different. When I wasn’t working on marketing materials for Waypoint, I organized history materials, stuffed envelopes, and assisted with fundraising efforts. This internship has given me great experience and prepared me for a career in marketing or public relations.
I have enjoyed my internship at Waypoint very much because of all the connections I have made with the employees and how much fun I had supporting the marketing efforts of this organization. I am excited to return to college in the fall, but I will miss all of the friendly faces at Waypoint.
