On any given day, there are 2,749 people who are homeless in Iowa as reported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Locally, Waypoint is a leader in helping end homelessness through multiple best practice, cutting-edge services including:
- Coordinated Entry: Serving as the central access point for housing assistance. Waypoint provides individualized support to help households identify immediate needs, navigate barriers, and connect with the most appropriate housing intervention or shelter. Over 20 local agencies are supported by Waypoint through this collaborative approach.
- Homeless Diversion: Helps individuals facing imminent homelessness identify safe, appropriate housing options, avoid shelter, and return to housing. Provides case management and community resource navigation for those at risk of housing instability.
- Rapid Re-Housing: Supports households experiencing homelessness with housing placement, landlord advocacy, case management, and short-term financial assistance for rent or security deposits. Rapid Re-Housing is a national best practice for reducing homelessness.
- Tenant Academy: Teaches tenant rights and responsibilities while helping those with limited or poor rental history strengthen their housing skills. Participants receive a certificate to share with potential landlords.
- Street Outreach: Builds trust with unsheltered individuals while connecting them to community resources and support systems. Assessments help identify housing needs and connect households to available housing programs.
- Busse Landing - Madge Phillips Apartments: 12 entry-level, affordable apartments prioritized for households experiencing homelessness or housing instability, accompanied by supportive services to create lasting stability.
